I was a student of Bohdan’s for Junior and Senior year Spanish at Greenwich High School.
Bohdan was an inspiring and effective language teacher. He taught language as a gateway into music, film & culture. In his presence you just felt your world getting bigger.
He took his students seriously - acknowledged that they were real people with opinions and convictions that mattered. He treated us like the adults we would sound become. It was empowering to be regarded in this way by someone as smart and cultured as him.
In my case, he saw past an awkward and confused teenager who wasn’t sure whether to break the rules or abide by them. He knew I was a musician and exploring jazz. He implored me to do a class presentation on the percussionist Mongo Santamaria and to "really, really listen to him". This was just one of many seeds he planted.
Years later we ran into each other at Veselka Diner in the East Village. He said something to the affect of “I expect great things of all of you”, referring to his students.
I am fortunate to have known him and to have been one of his students.

Not only was he the most kind, caring, funny (punny) guy, my uncle was also a primary force behind my love of music. It started with a Casio keyboard that he brought me, and then the next visit there was the rainstick, after that, the cd of the didgeridoo. I will always look back fondly on the the times we spent with him, his silly sense of humor was contagious and his ability to make others feel heard and important (even as children) was second to none. He was deservedly beloved by all who were lucky enough to know him, and he loved them fiercely, particularly my mother, my cousins and my beautiful aunt Wendy. I will miss him, but he left behind a wonderful legacy, love you ladies.

Wendy & Family,
I will remember Bohdan as the kind, gentle person he was.
Your enduring, beautiful marriage to him was rare, indeed.
I know the two of you loved trying out new restaurants and
food together. You were fortunate to have benefitted from his
extraordinary culinary gifts at home!
Bohdan’s love of music and especially James Brown inspired me
to start my own collection of James Brown. Once, I even got to
watch Bohdan do a “rare dance” to Brown’s music!
Bohdan possessed an understated brilliance which was remarkable.
I am sure he leaves a large void with all who knew him.

Bohdan was an incredible person, a real life "Renaissance Man", so articulate and fluent in so many languages, and such a love. Doug and I would be amazed at his culinary skill, being able to recreate a dish he had at a restaurant and make it at home with improvements! We still have a recipe for a shrimp dish with vegetables and sauce he made which we had at your house which was absolutely delicious! He was witty, loving, and erudite, and the world will be less full without him.

Our special friend Bohdan was family for us. We met as colleagues and shared our love for Spanish literature, music, film, and the joy of preparing delicious dinners for our friends. We celebrated many happy occasions together and enjoyed a special trip to London with Wendy and my husband Hector to surprise our dear friend David and his family! So many wonderful moments shared-Bohdan will always be in our hearts.

The loss of Bohdan has brought a profound sadness in my life. He was the most important male figure during my first 30 years and, although the richness of memories I cling to keep me grounded, the vacuum created by his absence will never be filled. I am so grateful that he shared his years with me.
When we were young, he was a constant friend. It was his generosity that set him apart from other older siblings. Rather than ignore my presence, he welcomed it and often took me along when engaging with his friends. I still remember how his protective instinct could have placed him at great risk (running into the night with nothing but boxer shorts upon hearing screams when I was attacked in the back yard). His caring seemed to have no limits concerning myself and his friends- he possessed a rare generosity of spirit. Bohdan was also a champion punster and prankster. The former elicited thousands of groans and the latter often exasperated me as a youngster. How I wish he would scare the hell out of me one more time.
I owe deep gratitude to his friends/brothers, Andrei and George, not just for tolerating my presence all those young years, but for the unfailing friendship they shared for the rest of his life. And for David’s 40 year long, warm friendship and loyalty. But I’m especially grateful to my extraordinary friend, Wendy, for the 40 years of happiness you brought him and the strength, resolve and compassion you displayed during his most difficult days. You are truly a strong woman, and I love you deeply for your uncompromising kindness.
Rest peacefully, my sweet Bohdan.

First off, I want to send my sincere sympathy and condolences to Wendy, Lauren and Natasha. We will miss him terribly. There are many, many things that can be said about someone like Bohdan. So many great things. His personality, his humor, and yes… his good looks! He has been a dear friend to our family for over 50 years. Over time people tend to attach certain things to certain people that bring back memories. For me, there are three. The first is music. There wasn’t anything he didn’t know about any song, album or artist. My introduction to Willie Nelson and reggae came via Bohdan. When he came to visit us in the early 70s, he not only brought bottles of wine he brought albums. To this day, a road trip is not a road trip without Willy. Second, he was a great cook. We loved his Brazilian dish, fejuada. Don’t forget the orange slices. He gave me a recipe for chicken liver pate. It was the most complicated dish I’ve attempted, but I tried and it was a big success when I presented it at our daughter’s christening party. This is a very treasured item for me. A small piece of paper with a handwritten recipe. I am sharing the recipe with you if you are up to a challenge and want to spend some time taking it on with good music in the background. Lastly, I have always admired and appreciated Bohdan’s love of Native American history and culture. Something we had in common.
And so to you, Bohdan…I am quite sure that many people have their own memories of you. How could they not? You were an amazing person. You will forever be the
King of Puns. Rest In Peace and know that you brought us all great joy and were much loved.

Bohdan and I were closest of friends since high school in Chicago, having been introduced by our common pal, George M. We shared tastes in music, poetry and literature, and maintained our deep friendship into our senior years. Bohdan was in my wedding party, and godfather to our son Basil, and there is not enough room to share all the great adventures we had together, before we each got married and afterwards. He was a brother from another mother, and I will miss him immensely. RIP dear friend!

Bohdan was always a gentle, consummate gentlemen. As a permanent member of our Clark House "lunch bunch", he entertained us with his humor, knowledge of films and music, as well as his wisdom. Always at hand to offer a helping hand, he was a trusted colleague and friend. May all your loving memories of Bohdan comfort you always.

Señor Kodak was a much beloved teacher in the Spanish department and a bright spot in my day when I was an overstressed junior student consumed with university applications. While his classes were always challenging, he never failed to bring humour and levity to class so that his lessons weren’t just instructive, they were enjoyable. It was because of Señor Kodiak that I went on to major in Spanish at university. I will always be grateful for having been in his classes and being able to absorb the knowledge and love of learning that he bestowed upon his students. My deepest condolences to his family.

What can I say about my dear darling, wonderful, sweet friend that you don’t already know? There are so many wonderful adjectives and superlatives to describe him. He was such a beautiful soul and a true friend. We first met in 1980 at The King School in Stamford and immediately a bond was formed between us. We shared the love of music, the love of food and fine cocktails and the love of life. We made it our goal to find ourselves each a beautiful lady. We were men on a mission. Mission accomplished. Bohdan found his beautiful wife, Wendy and I, Robin. The four of us became friends for 34 years before Robin’s passing. It gives me great comfort knowing that Bohdan is now with his dear friend Robin. They are in a special place enjoying each other’s company once more. Bohdan may have been able to speak 5 languages, but he could not get the hang of my native “Geordie”. LOL. I was able to teach him a few words, enough to get him into trouble, just like he taught me a few Spanish words, enough to get me into trouble. I have so many wonderful stories. So many great memories. I miss you dearly my friend. God bless your beautiful soul! I love you! David Cooper

I met Bohdan while we were both teachers at King, before Low-Heywood Thomas School merged with King School many years ago. We had many lively conversations about life, teaching, family and friends. He told me the story of how he met Wendy and was absolutely captivated by her beauty and intelligence. I was lucky not only to have him as a colleague but also as the Spanish teacher to my three children. Later on when he taught at Greenwich High School he was a colleague to my daughter, Pilar. Small world! She has a great affection for him, and he was a mentor to her. We shall all miss him.

Bohdan and I met during our teenage years almost sixty years ago in Chicago. We had so much in common. Both born in Austria to Ukrainian parents. Both lived in Brazil in our early years. Both spoke Ukrainian, Portuguese and English by our early teens.
Bohdan became not just my best friend but my fourth brother. I have three. There is nothing I could not share with him and vice versa.
Bohdan was smart, trustworthy, caring and with a great sense of humor and an open heart towards everyone.
As time went on we moved to different parts of the country but we always stayed in touch by phone or by visiting.
I am blessed to have had Bohdan in my life. Memories of him will be with me forever.
I will miss him. God Bless.
