Obituary of Vincent A. Manjoney

Dr. Vincent A. Manjoney, Sr., age 91, of Trumbull, passed away on Friday, October 4, 2013 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Delia Montanaro Manjoney. Born in Bridgeport, on March 23, 1922, he was the son of the late Vincent and Mary Riccio Manjoney. Dr. Manjoney was a 1944 graduate of the University of Vermont and 1947 graduate of the University of Vermont Medical School. He completed an internship at St Vincents Hospital, and then worked for a year in general practice, and 5 additional years doing anesthesia at St. Vincents. He then pursued additional education, completing a post-graduate masters course in Ophthalmology from NYU Post-Graduate Medical School of New York University-Bellevue Medical Center. He followed with residency training in Ophthalmology at the prestigious Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital. Dr. Manjoney served as Ensign in the Naval Reserve during World War II, attending medical school during that time. After the war, he continued in the Naval Reserve, then as a physician, in the Army Reserve, and was reactivated by the Army Medical Corps in 1955. He served two years, achieving the rank of Major, at Rodriguez Army Hospital at Fort Brooke, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, starting the Ophthalmology Program there. On returning to Bridgeport in 1957, Dr. Manjoney began his practice of Ophthalmology that spanned over 40 years. He served as Chief of Ophthalmology at St. Vincents Medical Center for many years. His daughter, Dr. Delia Manjoney, joined him in practice, in 1986. Dr. Manjoney had a wide variety of outside interests and talents. He loved music, and played the saxophone and clarinet in local bands. He played his first professional performance on his twelfth birthday. During the late 1930s, he played regularly in various bands, including the Playboys, with a contract with the Loewes Theater Group. He was a champion tennis player, playing for the University of Vermont, and captaining teams that won the Army and All Services Championships of the Antilles in 1956 and 1957. Dr. Manjoney also loved to play golf and was a longtime active member of the Mill River Country Club in Stratford until his death. Dr. Manjoney had a wonderful sense of humor and thoroughly enjoyed life, with a fine appreciation for ice cream sodas and Bridgeport hot dogs. Survivors include his children, Dr. Delia Manjoney and her husband Frank Metrusky, of Stratford, Dr. Deborah Manjoney and her husband Dr. Scott Stanwyck of Wisconsin, Dr. Vincent A. Manjoney, Jr. and his wife Susan of Easton, Ms. Dale Manjoney of Roxbury, and Dr. Dawn Manjoney and her husband Bill Ressler of Virginia Beach, VA, four beloved grandchildren, Cole Stanwyck, Lauren Stanwyck, Matthew Manjoney and Colin Manjoney and numerous sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Dr. Richard Manjoney and Dr. Robert Manjoney, Sr. Funeral Information Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 11, 2013 and at 10:00 a.m. directly in St. Catherine of Siena Church, 200 Shelton Rd., Trumbull for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in Nichols Village Cemetery, Trumbull. Friends may call on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull.
