Obituary of Robert C. Messemer
Robert C. Messemer, age 88, of Trumbull, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 25, 2024 at his home. He was the beloved husband of 54 years to the late Joan (McGroary) Messemer. Born in Woodside, NY on July 24, 1936, he was a son of the late Charles and Mary (Smith) Messemer and a 52 year Trumbull resident.
As a young man, Robert was proud to have graduated from one of the three premier specialized high schools at that time in New York City: Brooklyn Technical High School. After completing high school, he joined the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Korean War. Upon completing his military service, he continued his education at New York University where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. After completing his education, he began his 35-year career in logistics in various management positions working for industry-leading companies including the Union Pacific Railroad, Union Carbide, Stauffer Chemical, Chesebrough-Ponds, and Rhone-Poulenc where he retired as the Director of Distribution and Purchasing. During this time, he was a member of many professional organizations, including the Chemical Manufacturers Association, where he testified on their behalf before the Congress of the United States, leading to significant changes in the chemical industry. After retiring from Rhone-Poulenc, he became a successful entrepreneur and established his own logistics consulting firm, Messemer and Associates, which served the chemical industry for over 20 years.
Above all else, he was the foundation of a loving family that he and his beloved wife, Joan, built. He was a steadfast father to his four children, providing unwavering support and encouragement throughout their lives as they raised their families and embarked on successful careers. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he reveled in their accomplishments; they looked to him for his opinion and guidance. Grandpa never missed an opportunity to attend a grandchild’s school or sporting event. He was the family's central communicator and loved to receive a quick call to share some good news.
He enjoyed the many Messemer family meals and vacations. He was a lifelong, struggling New York Jets fan, a season ticket holder for almost 50 years, spending countless Sundays at the stadium with his children: a memory they will always cherish.
He was an American patriot and a faithful Catholic who instilled those values in his family. He reminded us all that living in this country is a privilege — not to be taken lightly. God bless America, the greatest Country in the world.
Survivors include four loving children: Marianne Uus and her husband Dennis Castellano, Robert Messemer and his wife Nancy, Michael Messemer and his wife Lisa, and Karen Cook and her husband Bill, nine cherished grandchildren, Michael Uus and his wife Jacqueline, Emily Uus, Kathleen Messemer and her husband Michael McHugh, Kelly Messemer and her fiancé Brendan Cheevers, Brian Messemer, Grace and Sarah Messemer, and Samantha and Riley Cook; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers Charles, Thomas, Richard, and Denis Messemer, and a son-in-law, Erik Uus.
