Sister M. Helenann (Barbara Jean) Nelson, a School Sister of Notre Dame, died on May 19, 2023, at St. Vincent Hospital, Bridgeport, Connecticut, at age 83.

She was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on October 20, 1039. After pronouncing her vows as an SSND in 1959, she taught in Irvington, New Jersey and Westbury, Long Island, New York, before becoming a missionary in Santiago, and Los Andes. Chile, and Lima, Peru. In New York, Sister Helenann was Principal at Most Holy Redeemer School, on East 4th Street, Manhattan.

In retirement Sister Helenann had resided at The Watermark, in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Her Wake Service and Funeral Liturgy will take place, on Thursday, June 1, at St Andrew Church, Anton Street, Bridgeport, beginning at 10:30, with Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11:30. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery, Bethel, Connecticut.
