Obituary of Albert Zamary
Albert Zamary (Al), age 86 of Trumbull, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2023, at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Danbury, CT to Syrian immigrant parents, the late John D. and Sadika Nassra Zamary. Al is survived by his wife, Evelyn Showah Zamary, with whom he spent over 60 wonderful years. Al is also survived by 3 children and their families: Mark Zamary and daughter-in-law Gina, grandson Mark Jr; Michele Zamary Mirmina, granddaughter Julianne and grandson Michael; Denice Burns and son-in-law Kenneth, granddaughters Meaghan, Kate, and Tara. He was also blessed to have 12 nieces and nephews and 26 great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Anna and husband Abraham Matthews, sister Mary Zamary, brother Joseph Zamary, and brother John Zamary.
Al attended the University of Bridgeport and studied business. His career in the food business started at First National grocery store as the manager of the meat department. He was an entrepreneur who started his own business in 1972, Zamary's Southport Market, centered in the beautiful Southport Harbor area. He expanded his work to include a catering business that he ran for 40+ years. His customers became his friends, who he cherished and kept in touch with through the years. His work ethic, inherent store ownership experience, and love of cooking stemmed from his parents. His family moved to Trumbull, CT in 1942 and owned Zamary's Market, which is now known as "The Corner Deli."
Al especially cherished Sunday dinners with his family in his home. He was "Giddu" to his 6 grandchildren. The dining room table was always full of laughter, loud discussions, and of course jokes he would instigate with his 6 loves. Al was a devout Christian and one of the founding families of St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church in Bridgeport, CT. He was a pillar in his church community and held the Board President position for multiple terms as well as the chairman of the church festival. Once retired from the board, Al could be found in the narthex of the church with his Marine buddy, helping parishioners at the candle stand or with donations. Al was proud to have served in the US Marine Corps and ensured that his children and all around him knew the Marine Hymn. He joined the Marines in 1956 and was in platoon 43 of the 3rd recruit battalion. Al continued to exemplify the Marine spirit throughout his life. No matter where he was or what he was doing, if he ran into a fellow Marine, a conversation would ensue. Semper Fi, Oorah! Al was also a Police Commissioner for the Town of Trumbull for 13 years. He proudly served his town with dedication and commitment.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Al Zamary, to the St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church Scholarship Fund and St. Jude Children's hospital, www.stjude.org.
