Obituary of Anna Matthews

Anna Zamary Matthews, age 89, of Trumbull, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, November 24, 2021. She was the beloved wife of the late Abraham Matthews, with whom she spent 63 wonderful years. She was born in Danbury on August 18, 1932, the daughter of the late John and Sadika (Nassara) Zamary.

Anna was a graduate of Bassick High School in Bridgeport. Following high school, she studied Fashion Merchandising at the University of Bridgeport and worked as a manager at Lerner's Department Store. She also worked with her loving brother Al at his catering business for many years. Nothing made her happier than attending Sunday church and having dinner with her family. Known for her cooking, her door was always open, her table always full, and you were sure to be treated to lively conversation, food, and drink.

The daughter of immigrant parents, she grew up in a household that instilled the importance of family and faith. As an active member of the St. NIcholas Ladies Auxiliary, she worked tirelessly preparing food for church events. She was known for her recipes, which she willingly shared with anyone who called or stopped by.

Survivors include her four loving children, Katherine Buzel and her husband George of Trumbull, David Matthews of Newtown, Michael Matthews and his wife Carolyn of Southbury, and Mary McNelis and her husband David of Woodbridge. She is also survived by her ten grandchildren, Sara and Paul Buzel, David and Jacquelyn Matthews, Kevin and Alexandra Matthews, Daniel and his wife Alexandra, Michael, Jonathan, and Victoria McNelis, as well as many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Anna is predeceased by her brothers Joseph and John. She is survived by her brother Al, her sister Mary and her loving sisters-in-law.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at 10:00 am in St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church, 5458 Park Ave., Bridgeport.
