Obituary of Adolfo J. Luciano, MD

Adolfo Joseph Luciano MD, Trumbull, CT, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family, on October 21, 2021.

Adolfo was born on January 14, 1943 to Gennaro and Gemma Luciano in Moiano, Italy. At the age of 17, in December 1960, he and his family emigrated to Waterbury, CT. He began working as a custodian at Somma Tool Company while concurrently learning English and attending school. He loved solving problems and during his time at Somma Tool Company, climbed the ranks and became a machinist and tool designer. However, he always aspired to become a physician. After graduating from Crosby High School, Adolfo attended the University of Connecticut and went on to earn his Masters in Chemical Engineering. He realized that his dream of becoming a physician could truly become a reality and he then attended UConn Medical School, obtaining his MD in 1972. He became a cardiologist, built a successful medical practice at Advanced Cardiovascular Specialists, and had a long, flourishing career at Bridgeport Hospital. He had a deep passion for caring for others and he loved his career.

Adolfo was an accomplished winemaker, a tradition that he passed on to his son, Paul. He was an avid fan of Serie A soccer and always rooted for Napoli. He loved playing tennis, skiing, traveling, and being by the ocean. He enjoyed listening to opera and Italian songs, and despite not having formal training, could play the piano, accordion, and sing. He always had an appetite for Italian food. He allegedly never liked sweets, but he always finished everyone’s dessert. He was a master chef of Sunday morning omelets, always with a choice selection of Italian charcuterie. With his engineering background and ingenuity, he could fix anything. He had an unparalleled joie de vivre and never missed an opportunity to take full advantage of every opportunity that life presented him. He was a kind, loving, and supportive husband and father – his biggest love was his family.

Although a physician by trade, Adolfo was a teacher at heart. He was quick to pull a pen from his shirt pocket and impart his knowledge on the back of dinner napkins. After long days of work, he spent many late nights helping his children with their homework and relished in discussing complicated math problems on long family car rides.

Adolfo was the embodiment of the American Dream. He came to this country as a young man and worked tirelessly to achieve his goals. With his intellect, perseverance, and dedication he built a successful career and a beautiful, fulfilling life. Adolfo touched many lives and he will be dearly missed.

Adolfo was predeceased by his mother and father and is survived by his adoring wife of 43 years Anna (née Carlotto), his children Gina, Carlo, and Paul, their respective spouses, Harry, Katie, and Sara, his grandchildren Lily and Colin, his four siblings Anthony, Gina, Pasquale, Salvatore and brother-in-law James Carlotto and their respective spouses, and his mother-in-law Maria Carlotto. His family is grateful for the compassionate and nurturing support from his caregivers and his physician Dr. Cynthia Gentes.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, October 25, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Theresa Church, 5301 Main St. Trumbull. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waterbury. Friends may greet the family on Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull. Individuals attending the wake will be required to wear masks and social distance and after paying respects will exit without lingering out of concerns for COVID. Masks and social distancing will also be required at the funeral mass and burial.
