OB and I met in college and bonded over Marlboro ciggies, 10:00 PM runs to the Boston House of Pizza, and all-nighters in the smoker of St. Ann Hall, the dorm where we both lived. She was a junior and I a first year student stuck in an uncomfortable roommate situation. For some reason, OB didn't have a roommate at the time so before the end of that fall semester she offered to let me move in with her. This was my first experience with OB’s kindness and generosity but it certainly wouldn’t be my last. We roomed together spring semester of that year and both semesters of the following year. Hands down, those were the best days of my college experience! We spent hours talking about politics, the Vietnam War, apartheid in South Africa; and, we lamented over the plight of the farm workers in California. It was becasue of OB that I decided to major in sociology. As I recall, we also spent a fair amount of time smoking ciggies and drinking Michelob while OB practiced her art of spinning tunes -- for us and for anyone else who happened to visit our room. She had a considerable album collection and a gift for selecting just the right music to suit any occasion or mood. Phil Ochs, Laura Nero, Nina Simone, Jacques Brel, Fiddler on the Roof, Liza Minnelli, and Barbara Streisand were just some of her favorites. Of course she knew the words to all of the songs and I have very fond memories of her singing happily along to the music. I could go on forever. Kind, sweet, and wonderful OB -- with twinkling eyes, a big smile, and an even bigger heart — you made the world a better place and you will always remain dear to me. May you rest easy in the grace and love you so rightly deserve. To Shelley, Maureen, Trevor, Kyle, Kynia, Paxton, Hudson, Harper and other members of the O’Brien family, please accept my deepest condolences on your loss. May God keep you all in the hollow of His hand and may you find peace, comfort, and strength in your memories of OB.

Mary, such a beautiful tribute to OB. As I read it I felt OB standing next to me laughing. Thank you for sharing. Emmanuel was a gift in many ways but especially for meeting the wonderful women there who became life-long friends.

To the O'Brien Family,
We send you our heartfelt condolences at OB's passing. We are the "Emmas" - friends of OB since 1969 when we all met at Emmanuel College. We have remained fast friends over all these years. Our last reunion, fall of 2019, was especially special. Shelley helped us arrange time with OB to walk the beach and share memories with her. We too grieve her passing but she will always be one of us!
