What a great example of husband and father. I am better for knowing John. Moreover I know his faith in Jesus makes me confident he is in heaven celebrating today. I pray for all his family as you grieve his loss, but for him to die is gain and as Jesus said in John 14.2 ( In my Father's house there are many mansions, if it were not so, I would have told you. And if I go and prepare a place for you) He is certainly in glory today praise God.
We love you all.

I am so sorry for your loss. John was a wonderful neighbor for many years and I have so many memories; many of which have to do with John working in the yard or me going to sell school fundraisers and he would smile and say “Go see Barb”. You will be missed John, but now you are smiling and singing with our Lord and Savior.

I had many teachers over the years , but this man I remember clearly. I remember having science class, the evolution of man. I remember him explaining the science side and dabbling with the religious side. And at the same time reminding us we have the choice to choose for ourselves. He discussed his struggles within himself being a science teacher and a religious man. And how life is difficult. I remember parents being involved and speaking out. The good old conflicts between religion and School.. oh yes this was Middlebrook at the time... as his student sitting in class I remembered how wonderfully he balanced himself between the two as he taught us science that year. I know I learned a lot more than just science that year. God bless him and his family.
I am sincerely sorry for their loss.

I first met John in August of 1981, i had just accepted a position at CHS, I made the mistake of coming to campus a week before faculty orientation just to touch base and get a little acclimated to the area and community. Within 45 of setting foot on the school grounds I was somehow riding Co-pilot in the 1976 big biue dump truck with John Slivka at the wheel, 20 minutes later I was in the catacombs of some Trumbull School building, flashlight in hand “schlepping” furniture to be used at CHS. To this day I’m really not convinced we had permission but John assured me we were fine and we loaded up the first of several trips that day. I grew to admire and so appreciate that man. He didn’t just do his job he lived his job, his passion and commitment was contagious. His love for the Lord and Love for the kids was straight from his heart, kids have great radar for this, ask any of his former students, they’ll tell you just how much he cared! Thank you John for setting such a sweet example of a life well lived, you have left an amazing and special legacy, very hard to follow but a powerful example to strive for.
