Obituary of William John Walko
William John Walko, age 87, of Trumbull passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, May 13, 2018. He was the beloved husband of Claire Gifford Walko. Born in Bridgeport on January 5, 1931, he was the son of the late John F. and Mary Lukacsik Walko.
Mr. Walko was proud to have served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He had obtained his Bachelor's Degree from Fairfield University in 1952 and later served as the Personnel Director for the Norwalk Board of Education for many years before his retirement. He was an avid gardener and intrepid bargain hunter but found his greatest enjoyment in the time spent with his family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him, but would want to be remembered with laughter over tears. Because he enjoyed the journey.
In addition to his beloved wife of 52 years, Claire, other survivors include his devoted children, Sharon Garber and her husband Patrick of Trumbull, John Walko, William S. Walko of Trumbull and Melissa Núñez and her husband Alexander of Trumbull. He is also survived by his five cherished grandchildren, Kevin Garber, Stephen Garber, Jillian Núñez, Jason Núñez and Justin Núñez, and his sister, Rosemarie Halapin of Trumbull, as well as a host of loving nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. directly in St. Stephen Church, 6948 Main St., Trumbull. Interment with full military honors will follow in St. John Cemetery, Stratford. Friends may greet the family on Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made payable to Daughters of Charity of the Most Precious Blood, 1490 North Avenue, Bridgeport, CT 06604 or the Alzheimer's Foundation of America online at https://alzfdn.org/support-us/donate/
