Obituary of Jose Henrique Fernandes

Jose Henrique Fernandes, age 88, of Easton passed away peacefully on Friday, December 9, 2016 at Ludlowe Health Care surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Gloria Costa. Born in Beca, Portugal on February 8, 1928, he was a son of the late Damiáo Fernandes and Ana Maria Bogalhas. Mr. Fernandes was employed by Cornell-Carr Company, Inc. of Monroe, where he worked as a carpenter for many years before his retirement. Jose was a board member of the Vasco de Gama Portuguese cultural and Civic Center. When he wasn't playing card games with his friends at the cultural center, you would find him at home working on his garden, spending time with his grandchildren and barbecuing for family and friends. Jose's trademark smile and youthful spirit captivated the hearts of those around him. A loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother, he will be deeply missed by all who knew him. In addition to his beloved wife of 65 years, Gloria, other survivors include his loving children, Maria Odete F. Goncalves and her husband Nelson of Trumbull, Elisabete Fernandes of Montreal, Canada, Beatrice Fernandes of Bridgeport, Adilia Fernandes Batchelor and her husband Brad of Trumbull and Sergio C. Fernandes and his wife Martina of Easton, twelve cherished grandchildren, Paulo Goncalves (Lina), Natacha Valade (Vincent), Raquel Goncalves, Clesha DaSilva (Joanna), Carlos Goncalves, Michelle Jacobs (Mark), Nicole Santos, Andrew Batchelor, Alexis Fernandes, Tiffany Fernandes, Victoria Batchelor and Branden Fernandes, his brother, Manuel Fernandes and his wife Teresa of MA, as well as six adored great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Antonio Fernandes and sisters, Hipolita Lage, Irene Lage and Maria Sanches. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. directly in St. Andrew Church, 435 Anton St., Bridgeport for a Mass of Christian Burial. Entombment will follow in the Community Mausoleum of Lawncroft Cemetery, Fairfield. Relatives and friends may greet the family on Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull.
