Obituary of Thomas Aloysius Herlihy
U. S. Navy Veteran of World War II
Thomas Aloysius Herlihy, of Trumbull, died on Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at his daughters home. He was born in Washington, D.C., son of the late Daniel and MaryAnne Herlihy. The family moved to Ireland when he was a child. Thomas returned to the United States as a young man, joining the U.S. Navy at the start of World War II. He served aboard the USS Ticonderoga and received the Purple Heart in1945. After his honorable discharge, he joined the Washington, D.C. Fire Department. He served for twenty seven years, retiring with the rank of captain in 1972. Thomas was predeceased by his first wife, Catherine Fitzpatrick Herlihy in 1984 and his second wife Doris Conrad Herlihy, in 2001. He is survived by his daughter, Maureen Kunkel and her husband Mark of Trumbull; three grandsons, Michael Kunkel and his wife Christine and their three children, Hailey, David and Michael Jr., of Trumbull, Matthew Kunkel and his wife Leah of Shelton and their children Nicholas and Ava, and David Kunkel of Trumbull. Also is survived by two step-grandchildren, Allison and Emily Shorb of Germantown, MD. He is also survived by a brother, James Herlihy of Arlington, VA and a sister Helen Marie Harnedy of Skibbereen, County Cork, Ireland as well as several nieces and nephews in Ireland and America. He was predeceased by a brother, Daniel Herlihy. Funeral Information
