Obituary of Mimi Chin

Mimi Chin, age 84, beloved wife of Don Y. Chin, took her rightful place in Heaven while at home and surrounded by her loving family on Monday, September 7, 2015. Born in Schenectady, NY on November 15, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Henry Jung and Shee Leon Jung. At age four she and her family moved from New York to China to escape the Depression and live in her ancestral village. Not long after the Second World War ended, Mimi lost her mother at age 15. With the rest of her family having already returned to New York, she had to manage on her own until, with the aid of both the Maryknoll Fathers & Brothers and Maryknoll Sisters, she made her way back to the United States at age 17. After Mimi and Don married in 1953, they started a family in Niagara Falls, New York before moving to Connecticut and finally settling in Trumbull in 1957. She was a longtime parishioner of St. Theresa Roman Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Society of Catholic Women and St. Theresa Ladies Confraternity. A staunch and unwavering New York Yankees fan, Mimi also loved gardening, knitting, and sharing her skill in the art of cooking -as well as her time-tested recipes - with others. After raising her five children, her role as mother and nurturer continued as she accepted guardianship of and raised her two nephews, Jeffrey and Kenneth. In addition to her husband of 62 years, Don, survivors include her loving children: Dennis Chin of Benicia, CA, David Chin of Brooklyn, NY, William Chin and his wife Deborah of Roxbury, CT, Catherine Terry and her husband Michael of Centerville, VA, Teresa Chin of Smyrna, GA; brother Charles Jung and his wife Josepha of Homestead, FL; nephews Jeffrey Hoo and his wife Shirley of Palos Verdes, CA, Kenneth Hoo of Atlanta, GA; 16 grandchildren: Amanda and her husband Kevin, Christopher and his wife Kayla, Cassandra, Gregory, Marissa, Alexander, Angelina, Dominic, Iman, Andrew and his wife Kelly, Emily, Anna, Michael, James, Grant, Kinsey; and two great grandchildren: Isabel and Harper; as well as many other nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers Lenwood and Robert Jung and a granddaughter, Sarah. Mimi's kindhearted and unselfish nature, her generosity and empathy, her enduring example of how to treat others with dignity and respect, and her dimpled smile will be missed by her family and everyone whose lives were touched by her all these years. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation for the care and kindness received from Masonicare at Newtown, Masonicare Home Health and Hospice, and the home healthcare aides. Friends may pay their respects on Friday evening, September 11, 2015 from 6-8 p.m. at the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 12, at 11:00 a.m. directly at St. Theresa Church, 5301 Main Street, Trumbull. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Maryknoll Sisters or Maryknoll Fathers & Brothers, if possible to those dealing in China.
