Obituary of Jose Vieira

Jose Vieira, age 94, of Fairfield, beloved husband of the late Joaquina Cortinhas Vieira, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2014. Born on December 27, 1919 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, to the late Jose and Duzinda Afonso Vieira, he was one of six siblings. Jose's passions besides spending time with family and friends was playing cards, dominoes, reading the Portuguese paper, gardening, making wine, sausages and spending time at his home in Portugal. He was a retired member of the Vasco da Gama Portuguese Club where he loved to spend time with his buddies. He retired from construction where he worked for many years and loved to spend summers in Portugal. He leaves to mourn his absence his two loving daughters, Maria L. Gerard of Monroe, Lydia Gerard and her husband Scott of Fairfield, his brother, Antonio Vieira of Sao Paulo, Brazil, his cherished grandchildren, Daniel Barros of NYC, Tiffany and Ben Erwin of Brooklyn, NY, Rebecca Gerard of Chicago, a nephew, Joseph Vieira of Newington and a goddaughter, Lina Alves Matera of Trumbull. In addition to numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in the USA, Portugal and Brazil, he leaves his brothers and sisters-in-law, Maria Vieira, Grace and Fernando Alves, Maria and Jose Cortinhas, Ana and Domingos Cortinhas, Amelia Dias and Maria and Guido Maini. In addition to his wife he was predeceased by siblings, John Vieira and Luisa Dias. The family would like to thank the staff at Tandent West of the Jewish Senior Services for the care, compassion and love bestowed upon Jose in the 3½ years of his residency there. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull, and at 11:00 a.m. in St. Jude Church, Monroe for a Mass of Christian Burial. Entombment will follow in St. Michael's Cemetery, Garden Mausoleum, Stratford. Relatives and friends may call on Monday from 4:00-8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Jewish Senior Services, 175 Jefferson St., Fairfield, CT 06425.
