Obituary of Henry H. Gross

Henry H. Gross, age 92, of Bridgeport, beloved husband of the late Margaret Izzo Gross, passed into eternal rest on Saturday, September 27, 2014, in Bridgeport Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Henry was born in Bridgeport on August 12, 1922, and except for his time in United States Army, lived his entire life on the East Side of Bridgeport. Henry graduated from Harding High School in 1940, and then began working at Remington Arms. After being drafted in 1942, Henry served with distinction as a Sergeant in both the North African and Western European campaigns, where he awarded the Bronze Star. After the cessation of hostilities, Henry stayed in Europe, serving as an interpreter for people who were displaced by the war. After being discharged in 1946, Henry returned to Bridgeport. He married Margaret Izzo in 1947, a marriage that would last over six decades. Henry and Margaret had one child, Pamela Marie, born in 1948. Mr. Gross worked for the city of Bridgeport for over 38 years in the Health Department, serving as Director of Environmental Health, retiring from that post in 1991. He was currently the President of the Bridgeport City Employees Federal Credit Union, a position that he held for over 50 years, and he also served as President of the Supervisors Union in Bridgeport for many years. He also served for many years as President of the Bridgeport Municipal Employees Retirees Association. In addition to his wife, Henry was predeceased by his daughter, Pamela Marie DeJoseph, and all of his siblings. Survivors include his son-in-law, Michael DeJoseph, Sr., of Stratford, and his grandchildren, Michael Anthony DeJoseph of Stratford, and Marie Elena DeJoseph of Stratford. The immediate family would especially like to thank Henry's niece and goddaughter, Mary Toohey Repko for the outstanding and loving care she provided Henry during his last days at Bridgeport Hospital. Friends are invited to meet directly in Holy Name of Jesus Church, 1950 Barnum Ave, Stratford on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. Relatives and friends may greet the family on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Amyloidosis Foundation, 7151 North Main St., Suite 2, Clarkston, MI 48346.
