Obituary of Nicholas Michael Cherick

U.S. Army Veteran Nicholas Michael Cherick, age 87, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, and formerly of Stratford (Lordship), Connecticut, devoted husband of Helen Mary Ugolik Cherick, died peacefully in the early morning of Friday, November 29, 2013, at his residence. His wife, daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren had all been by his side the previous evening. Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut on March 26, 1926, he was the son of James and Mary Cagganello Cherick. A 1943 graduate of Harding High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 17. A WWII veteran, he served as a radio packer and scout at the Battle of the Bulge. He was a retired sales director for Boss-Linco Freight Lines. In addition to his devoted wife of 59 years, Helen, survivors include his loving daughter, Donna Marie OConnor and her husband, Paul of Jacksonville, FL, two cherished grandchildren, Kristen Elizabeth OConnor and Bryan Nicholas OConnor, brother-in-law, John Ring of Shelton, as well as a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Jean Ring. Fondly referred to as The Mayor of Ponte Vedra By The Sea, Nick thoroughly enjoyed his neighbors and friends, both in CT and in FL. He leaves behind his faithful yellow lab Honey, to whom he skillfully managed to sneak treats, whenever no one was watching. He loved Big Band music, dancing, anything chocolate, the beach, throwing family parties, taking long drives on a Sunday afternoon, and talking with anyone who cared to have a conversation. A unique character, a devoted husband, a caring Dad, and a fun and lovable Grandpa, he will be sadly missed. Funeral Information Funeral services will take place on Friday, December 20, 2013 at 9:00 a.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull, and at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady Peace Church, Stratford for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment with military honors will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Newtown. Friends can greet the family on Thursday December 19, 2013 from 4 to 8 p.m.
