Obituary of Joseph Sciortino

Joseph Sciortino, age 87, of Trumbull, died Wednesday, December 29, 2004 at Shelton Lakes Health Care Center in Shelton. Born in Bridgeport on October 21, 1917, he was a son of the late Michael Angelo and Rose Scaduto Sciortino. A lifelong resident of Trumbull, Joseph graduated from Bassick High School in 1937 and was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a home building contractor in the 50s and 60s and built homes in the Fairfield County area. Mr. Sciortino was a member of the Trumbull High School Building Committee and of the board of Trumbull Police Commissioners for 22 years serving twice in the late 60s and early 70s. The Sciortino family was one of the first Italian families to reside in Trumbull and Joseph was the founder and first president of the Trumbull Italian Community Club. He was active in town politics and ran for Second Selectman in Trumbull in 1959 but was narrowly defeated. Mr. Sciortino was a strong republican, and made news in 1960, when Joseph and his wife, Rose happened to be near a campaign motorcade of John F. Kennedy in Stratford. Joseph knew one of the politicians in the car. At that time, Rose rushed to the car, shook JFK's hand, and told him that if he won she would like to go to the Inaugural Ball. Two months later an invitation arrived, and they attended.

Mr. Sciortino was pre-deceased by his wife, Rose Santossio Sciortino in 1993.

He is survived by three children, Michael Sciortino and his wife, Marilyn of Monroe, Arthur Sciortino of Shelton and Nancy Giarrantana and her husband, John of Port St. Lucie, FL, one sister, Virginia MacMulkin of Newport, Rhode Island, two brothers, Michael Sciortino of Trumbull and Arthur Sciortino of Council Bluffs, Iowa, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
